Museum History

The Zoology Museum of University of Tehran houses a remarkable and unique collection of natural science resources, scientific documents, and various biological resources from the vast land of Iran, particularly showcasing the diverse animal life of this region. Preparations for the museum began in 1954 under the guidance of the late Dr. Mostafa Fatemi, a zoology professor at the University of Tehran (1919-1959). Through his leadership and the dedicated efforts of his colleagues and students, the museum was finally inaugurated in 1959 as the "Science Museum."

Professors and researchers in the zoology department, including the late Dr. Mohammad Yazdandost, the late Dr. Pari Chehr Shah Bahrami, the late Dr. Talat Habibi, and the late Dr. Mohammad Baloch, played a significant role in the formation and expansion of the Zoology Museum. Mr. Reza Parsa and his son, Mr. Hossein Parsa, prepared most of the museum's specimens. These specimens have been prepared using various methods such as taxidermy, fixation in chemical solutions, skeletalization, and preservation in resin, and are displayed in the museum, making it the first science museum in Iran.

In 2018, following the approval of the museum's new bylaws, and considering its current mission and collection composition, the name was changed from the "Science Museum" to the "Zoology Museum."
