History of the Museum

The Zoology Museum of University of Tehran is a worthy and unique collection of natural science reserves, scientific documents, and various biological resources from the vast land of Iran, particularly showcasing the diversity of animals in this homeland. The preparation of the museum began in 1954 by the late Dr. Mostafa Fatemi, a professor of zoology at the University of Tehran (1919-1959), and under his guidance and the persistent efforts of colleagues and students, it was finally inaugurated in 1959 as the Science Museum. In the formation and expansion of the Zoology Museum, professors and researchers in the zoology department, including the late Dr. Mohammad Yazdandost, the late Dr. Pari Chehr Shah Bahrami, the late Dr. Talat Habibi, and the late Dr. Mohammad Baloch, played a major role. Most of the specimens in this museum were prepared by Mr. Reza Parsa and his son, Mr. Hossein Parsa. The specimens in this museum have been prepared and displayed using various methods such as taxidermy, fixation in chemical solutions, skinning, preservation in resin, and skeletonization, resulting in the creation of the first science museum in Iran.

Since 2018, and after the approval of the museum's new bylaws, considering its missions and the current composition of its specimens, the museum's name was changed from "Science Museum" to "Zoology Museum."
